Saturday 11th August – windsurf **** The Dip – Felixstowe – sunny
periods
F2 Xantos 310 with Tushingham Lightning 8.5 and 44 cm fin.
22.29 knot max., 20.86 knot ave., 13.05 knot hour, 19.88 knot mile, 40.70
km., 10.72 knot alpha.
After a 5-star bike ride this morning around Brightlingsea and a relaxing
lunch at Alresford I got some messages from the Felixstowe WhatsApp saying
it was windy enough to sail at Felixstowe so we packed up and headed home.
After dropping Mag off I was at The Dip at four just in time for Andy
Mexome to come ashore with 8.2 and say that the wind was dropping! I
carried on rigging my 8.5 for the 310 as I had a crap sail yesterday and
was keen to get out in the sunshine. Also, it was wind with tide I needed
all the help I could find. I spent a mellow hour all be it slightly under
powered cruising in the late afternoon sunshine:) As you launch from The
Dip you soon reach the rough water as the River Deben enters the sea, then
after a section of flat water you reach more rough water which is always
interesting and fun to sail through! You could then go broad down Bawdsey
bay but was struggling to make 20 knots as not windy enough. I did then get
a few gusts making 22 kts in the end. Then the wind swing more onshore so I
was able to go for a beat along the coast making it past the pier, planning
all the way. I then had a 5-mile broad reach back ending up near the East
Lane Martello, just about as much fun you can have on a windsurfer:) With
the sun disappearing behind cloud I headed back. I was not far enough out
to sea at the river mouth and had to walk through the fast-flowing water
for a bit before making it back. It was a bonus expected session and very
nearly 5 stars just needed a fraction more wind and out 105 minutes and
only fell in once too:). Might get out early tomorrow, fingers crossed for
some early wind and no rain!
PS – David Coles was again covering a big area on his foil with his
formula board until he hit an unmarked lobster pot, a big problem along
Felixstowe seafront, I think it’s about time we reported these
inconsiderate idiots. Hope you can repair your board David!!!
